What happens when you quit Methamphetamine
Read this firstLongest and deepest crash of the stimulants — expect 1–3 weeks of heavy sleep and low mood, then months of gradual dopamine recovery.
The timeline
Days 1–3 — The wall
12–20 hour sleeps, ravenous hunger, flat mood. Normal repair, not failure.
Week 1–2 — Low mood
Anhedonia, irritability, intense craving. Suicide risk peaks here — don't isolate.
Weeks 3–6 — Fog lifting
Thinking clears; 'meth dreams' and sudden cravings are common and pass.
Months 2–6 — Dopamine rebuild
Motivation and pleasure return slowly. Exercise is one of the few proven accelerants.
Month 6+ — Largely recovered
Most cognitive testing returns to normal ranges within 6–12 months.
What actually helps
- Eat and sleep on schedule — the brain needs raw materials to rebuild
- Cravings pass in waves; have a 15-minute plan (shower, walk, call someone)
- NA/MA meetings and contingency-management programs have the best evidence
The relapse ruleAfter even a week clean, your tolerance drops dramatically — an old dose can kill. If you slip: treat it like your first time, never use alone, keep naloxone close.
